HomeMy WebLinkAbout96-127RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING WORLD AIDS DAY DECEMBER 1, 1996 WHEREAS, the global spread of HIV infection and AIDS necessitates a worldwide effort to increase communication, education and preventive action to stop the transmission of H1V and the spread of AIDS; and, WHEREAS, the mint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) observes December 1 of each year as World AIDS Day, a day to expand and strengthen the worldwide effort to stop AIDS; and, WHEREAS, UNAIDS now estimates that over 20 million people are currently infected with HN, with more than 5 new infections occurring every minute; and, WHEREAS, the American Association for World Health is encouraging a better understanding of the challenge of HIV/AIDS nationally as it recognizes that the number of people diagnosed with HIV and AIDS in the United States continues to increase with over 513, 000 AIDS cases reported {as of December 1995); and, WHEREAS, World AIDS Day provides an opportunity to focus on HN infection and AIDS, caring for people with HN infection and AIDS, and learning about HIVIAIDS; and WHEREAS, the UNAIDS' designated 1996 World AIDS Day theme "One World, One Hope" (a) urges the world to work together to overcome the challenges caused by HIV/AIDS, {b) recognizes Chat everyone can do something about the pandemic through prevention, education, and compassion and (c} emphasizes the the hope of finding means to prevent and cure HIV/AIDS; THEREFORE, the Butte County Board of Supervisors do hereby declare December 1,1996 as World AIDS Day and urge all of our citizens to take part in activities and observances designed to increase awazeness and understanding of HTVIAIDS as a global challenge, to take part in HIVIAIDS prevention activities and programs and to join in the global effort to prevent transmission of HIV and the further spread of AIDS.
