RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING FEBRUARY
AS AMERICAN HISTORY MONTH
WHEREAS, The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR)
initiated February as American History Month. Its main objectives are historical, educational and
patriotic;
WHEREAS, the Society was incorporated June 4, 1891, and in 1896 was chartered by
Congress to which it reports annually through the Smithsonian Institution;
WHEREAS, more than 700,000 members have joined the NSDAR since its founding. There
are chapters in a1150 states, District of Columbia, Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, France and
Mexico;
WHEREAS, American history certificates and medals are awarded each year to children in
the fifth through eighth grades. Also, the Outstanding Teacher of American History contest
recognizes those teachers in public, private and parochial schools who foster a deeper understanding
of events in the struggle for independence and freedom to pursue life, liberty and the pursuit of
happiness.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Butte County Board of Supervisors
recognizes February as American History Month.
PASSED AND ADOPTED, this 28th day of January, 1997 by the following vote:
AYES: Supervisors Beeler, Dolan, Houx, Josiassen and Chair Davis
