RESOLUTION IN APPRECIATION OF
FIRE CHIEF RICHARD D. TILLER
WHEREAS, the County of Butte comprises an area of approximately 1600 square miles with
a population of approximately 220,000 residents, and
WHEREAS, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection {CDF) has been the
Butte County Fire Department {BCFD) since 1931, under the direction of the Board of Supervisors
protecting the unincorporated area of the County, and
WHEREAS, CDFtBCFD is an outstanding fire department and responds to all types of
emergencies including structure, vehicle and wild fires; medical emergencies, hazardous materials
incidents, technical rescues and the like and has combated many large and difficult emergencies over
the years, and
WHEREAS, the value of any emergency service provider is dependent on the quality of its
personnel and their training, experience and capabilities to command and mitigate life and property
threatening incidents, and
WHEREAS, CDF/BCFD Battalion Chief Richard D. Tiller started work for CDF in 1961
beginning as a seasonal firefighter at the Carmel Hill Fire Station in Monterey County and
progressed up through the ranks to the position of Battalion Chief in Butte County, and
WHEREAS, Chief Tiller first transferred to Butte County in 1977 from the CDF Fire
Academy and was initially assigned to Battalion 7 in Palermo, then Battalion 4 in the Chico Area
and retired as the Air Attack Officer at Chico Air Attack Base on September 30, 1996, and
WHEREAS, Chief Tiller always enjoyed the highesC respect of his peers, subordinates,
superiors, the public and elected officials; always performed outstandingly at routine and emergency
fire department incidents often commanding some of the most difficult emergencies in Butte County;
developed young fire fighters Co be competent and confident in undertaking the rigors of today's
emergency work; and was a team player his entire career,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLED, that the Butte County Board of Supervisors
hereby commends and thanks Battalion Chief 1Zichard ll. Tiller upon his retlreme.nt from
CDFlBCFD after 35 years of superior service to the taxpayers of California and Butte County, and
FURTHER BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board extends to Dick and his wife, Elli, the best
wishes in their retirement years.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Butte County Board of Supervisors this 11th day of
February, 1997, by the following vote:
AYES: Supervisors Beeler, Dolan, Houx, Josiassen and Chair Davis
