WHEREAS, California has been the nation's number-one farm state for 50 years and the state's farmers and
ranchers have led the U. S. In the production of 74 separate commodities, and
WHEREAS, California agriculture produces a bounty of more than 250 different commodities, and
WHEREAS, the state's farmers and ranchers, who represent less than l percent on the state's 32 million people,
contribute more than $22 billion in high-quality food, fiber and flower crops annually, and
WHEREAS, California agriculture supplies more than half of the nation's total supplies of fruits, vegetables and
nuts from just 3 percent of the nation's farmland, and fertile soils, forgiving climates, agricultural technology and innovation
allow each California farmer to produce food and fiber for 129 people, and
WHEREAS, California agriculture is a renewable economic resource for the state, creating income that is
replenished every year and helping to account for 9 percent of gross state product and one in ten jobs in the state, and
WHEREAS, Butte County's $298 million agricultural industry is a vital and vibrant contributor to our local
economy and our way of life, and
WHEREAS, farming remains a family business in Butte County, with nearly 94 percent of the county's farms and
ranches held by individuals and families, so therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, that the Butte County Board of Supervisors recognizes the contributions and honors the
achievements of farmers, ranchers and the 1.4 million people involved in jobs relating to California agriculture, and further
BE IT RESOLVED, that March 20, 1997 be declared National Agriculture Day and March 16-22, 1997 be
declared National Agriculture Week in Butte County to celebrate the achievements of the men and women who work
throughout the year in state's number-one industry.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Butte County Board of Supervisors this 1 lth day of March, 1997, by the
following vote:
