WHEREAS, Butte Caunty has many Native American residents who are interested in the
preservation of their culture and heritage; and
WHEREAS, Ishi, reputed to be the last member of the Yahi Tribe, died in ]916 and is
inurnecl at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Colma, California; and
WHEREAS, the Butte County Native American Cultural Committee, with the support of
federally recognized Indian Tribes located near Ishi's native ground, Native American elders, the U.
S. Forest Service, the U. S. Department of the Interior, the Bureau of Land Management, the City
of Oroville, Oroville Chamber of Commerce, and other interested parties, supports a repatriation of
Ishi's remains which have been displaced for many years; and
WHEREAS, the Butte County Native American Cultural Committee passed its Resolution
No. 97-O1 which authorized the Committee. to coordinate the relocation and placement of Ishi's
remains and spirit in his native Homeland.
NOW, 'I HEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Butte County Board of Supervisors
supports the repatriation of all of Ishi's remains and his spirit to his native grounds.
PASSED AND AllOPTED by the Butte County Board of Supervisors this 10th day of June
1996 be the follotiving vote:
AYES: Supervisors Beeler, Dolan, Houx, Josiassen and Chair Davis
