Duties 212/96 to 7/14197 At the beginning of this review period I was prosecuting general felonies arising out of North Butte County (2125196 to 6/20196). My specific duties included preparing and conducting jury trials. I also acted as a back up to the Domestic Violence Vertical Prosecution unit. During this review period I have been promoted from a general felonies jury trial assignment to vertical prosecutor for the Child Sexual and Physical Abuse Unit. As the prosecutor for the Child Sexual and Physical Abuse Unit, I have handled some of the most difficult cases involving complex legal research and interpretation and press and victim sensitive cases. As with all vertical prosecution I am involved with a case from its inception through trial and sentencing. This requires my presence at the CART interview in which a forensic interview specialist interviews victims of passible abuse. These interviews are conducted in a child sensitive interview roam. They are videotaped through closed circuit TV and the investigator and DDA observe the interview simultaneously in another room. The investigator and DDA are able to interject questions to the interview specialist via an audio transmitter. After a CART interview is completed and a competent and credible disclosure is made by the child the investigator continues their investigation including pretext telephone calls, obtaining corroborative information, and interviewing the suspect. Thereafter, the case is submitted to the DA's office for review. I review these requests for complaint. I am responsible for charging and filing complaints, pre PX offers, preliminary hearings, pretrial motions and legal. research, conducting ongoing reviews concerning advisability to prosecute and discussing problems with superiors. Ultimately, I am responsible for conducting jury trials and sentencing hearings. In addition, my duties include reviewing and filing petitions, conducting probable cause hearings, conducting jury trials and obtaining commitments for Sexually Violent Predator (SVP) civil commitment cases. 1 In the Fall of 1996 the DA's office was given a grant to establish a Statutory Rape Vertical Prosecution unit. I addition to my other duties I was assigned to this new unit as the vertical prosecutor. I have worked with Investigator Kris Simpson in implementing the grant in Butte County. The unit is still in the beginning phases. As of January $, 1997 the Butte County Courts were consolidated. Since that time the Child Sexual and Physical Abuse and the Adult Sexual Assault units have been consolidated in order to accommodate the new court calendar. In light of these changes, I have taken on one half of the Adult Sexual Assault cases. This new addition to my assignment will lend itself to new legal challenges associated with adult victims. As of May, 1997 our office again underwent reorganization and I now handle the Special Vicitms Unit E - K. This unit involves child sexual assault and physical abuse, adult sexual assault, and domistic violence cases for perpetrators who's last names begin with E - K. All of these cases are vertically prosecuted. IL Jury Trials Between February 25, 1996 and July 14, 1997 I have conducted eleven felony jury trials. Of those eleven jury trials nine have resulted in convictions and one in a partial hung jury. While at the DA's office I have conducted a total of 31 jury trials. I have an overall 80% conviction rate. III. Activities Conferences/Trainings Attended AdultlChild Sexual Assault Prosecution Seminar, June 3 - 7, 1996 CA Sexual Assault Investigators Assn.
