AS BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH
WHEREAS. in 1997, approximately 20,000 California woolen will be diagnosed with breast
cancer, and nearly 4,500 will die from the disease. In the North State, one woman every day is
diagnosed with breast cancer; and
WHEREAS, 180.200 new cases of female breast cancer will be diagnosed this year and
43,900--one every 12 minutes--will die as a result of this disease. We do not know how to prevent
breast cancer or how to cure it. Medical treatment for breast cancer costs this nation $6 million
annually. This does not include the cost associated with lost lives, lost productivity and the
devastation to families; and
WHEREAS, the death or ilhless of a woman due to breast cancer affects her family, whether
she is a mother, a sister or a daughter, and ultimately affects her community as well; and
WHEREAS, research shows that breast cancer mortality could be reduced by at least 30
percent if women followed recommended breast cancer screening guidelines. Research also shows
that only a very low percentage of women in our area are getting screening mammograms; and
Vl~'HEREAS, recommended, life-saving early detection methods include these regular
screenings for breast cancer; routine mammography, examination by a physician, and monthly breast
sell=examinations.
NOVV. "I'HERL,FORE, in recognition of the important, early detection practices available for
breast cancer, the Butte County Board of Supervisors hereby proclaims October 1997 as Breast
Cancer Awareness Month, and urges Butte County women to become aware that they are at risk.. and
to discuss a screening program with their health care providers.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Butte County Board of Supervisors this 23rd day of
September, 1997 by the following vote;
