HomeMy WebLinkAbout98-014PROCLAMATION DECLARING MARCH AS NATIONAL SOCIAL WORKER MONTH WHEREAS, a proclamation was issued an March 22, 1984, by President Ronald Reagan proclaiming March as National Social Worker Month; and WHEREAS, social work provides comprehensive supportive services, including education, vocational training, and other necessary services to assist in the achievement of personal and financial self-sufficiency for eligible participants; and WHEREAS, social work provides the front line of defense in the system of services aimed at protecting children from neglect and abuse, and in protecting the frail elderly and other dependent adults from neglect, abuse, and exploitation; and WHEREAS, social work requires the worker to possess an excellent understanding of self, to be proficient in exercising control over personal feelings and attitudes, and to utilize self-knowledge effectively to develop constructive, productive, non-punitive, helping relationships with clients; and WHEREAS, social work requires the performance of multiple, diverse, and unique roles, including but limited to, investigator, case manager, advocate, counselor, and nurturer; and WHEREAS, social workers, supervisors, and related managers/administrators employed by the department of Social Welfare provide the following direct/indirect services: in-home supportive services to frail/elderly adults, adult protective services to elderly/dependent adults, emergency response services to children reported to be abused andlor neglected, family maintenance, family reunification, permanency planning, juvenile court protection, long-term foster care/guardianship services to children/families, out-of-home care for children who are unable to live safely in their own homes, licensing/supervision of family foster homes, Options for Recovery Perinatal services, independent living skills for youth preparing for emancipation, CaIWORKs program job training and placement services to public assistance recipients to assist with attainment of employment, general assistance/food stamp employment and training services to adults to assist in attaining employment, referral and treatment of substance abuse or mental health problems that result in employment barriers, and advocacy far access to service providing agencies; and WHEREAS, social workers are assisted in the performance of their duties by a variety of highly skilled clerical and administrative support staff, eligibility workers, and their supervisors. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of Butte, State of California, hereby declare the month of March 1998 as Social Worker Month in Butte County to honor these social workers far their commitment to the profession of social work, their dedication to the highest moral and ethical standards, their practice of social work with the competency of their profession, and their regard as their primary obligation the welfare of the individuals and families served.
