RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING THE WF,F.K OF
APRIL 6-10, 1498 AS BARBERSHOP HARMONY WEEK
WHEREAS, the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing
in America, Inc. (SPEBSQSA) was officially organized on April 1 1, 193$ in Tulsa, Oklahoma. What
began as a small group 60 years ago has steadily blossomed into the world"s largest all-male singing
organization, an international organization of men from all stations of life; and
WHEREAS, SPEBSQSA is dedicated to the spread of harmony for the enjoyment of all people
of the world through organizing and encouraging close-harmony singing groups; and
WHEREAS. SPEBSQSA encourages har-nony amongst all people of the world through the
universal language of music. SPEBSQSA has actively preserved and presented a distinct style of vocal
music that originated in North America, and is dedicated to sustaining and preserving an American
tradition, the barbe-shop quartet; and
WHEREAS, SPEBSQSA promotes musical education through music scholarships and ot}~er
means, supports charitable foundations, and Barbershoppers are engaged in laudable civic service and
enrichment of our cultural life through the fostering of traditional values in entertainment and community
endeavors.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Butte County Boa-•d of Supervisors hereby
proclaims the week of April 6-] 0, 1998 as Barbershop Harmony Week.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Butte County Board of Supervisors this 24th day of March
1998 by the following vote:
AYES: Supervisors Beeler, Dolan, Houx, Josiassen and Chair Davis
NOES: None
ABSENT: None
