~~i ©~ iS Up,~,'yi~ •O~ • • ~ ~~ r ~~; :(/~i :*: ~*. ~h ~~y~uud• ~ ••~~ iv, ~ r C O U l~ ~~~ ~`~ BOARC} OF SUPERVISORS COUNTY OF BUTTE, STATE OF CALIFORNIA l~c~salufion 1~'0. 98-152 RESOLUTION OPPOSING TIIF, ANTI-TRAPPING INI'1'IA'I~IVE VbrHEREAS, Butte County is a rural county whose residents are likely to encounter or suffer economic losses from predatory wildlife; and WHEREAS, there is an initiative on the ballot for the November 1998 General Election, that would add provisions to the Fish and Game Code banning many of the commonly used methods of controlling predatory animals in California; and WHEREAS, Butte County, recognizing the need for effective wildlife management, has maintained a cooperative agreement with the United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services Unit far the management and control of problem wildlife for over 5~ years; and VVI'IEREAS, certain threatened and endangered species need protection from predators. and said protection can be most effectively provided through the selective use of traps and control methods administered by dualified Wildlife Specialists which the Anti-Trapping Initiative would ban; and WIIEREAS, such control methods are necessary in order to prevent damage to streams. stock ponds, reservoirs and other water storage facilities which can flood adjacent lands, structures and residences; and WHEREAS, prohibitions contained in the Anti-Trapping Initiative may restrict Butte County and United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Specialists from having available to them adequate control technology and tools necessary to prevent an increased risk of disease transmission from wildlife to humans; and WHEREAS, said prohibitions will result in increased livestock depredations and other economic losses and property damage to the residents of Butte County; and WHEREAS, passage of the Anti-Trapping Initiative is likely to result in the utilization of various home remedies which are non-selective, unproven and hazardous to the environment and human safety to control predatory wildlife. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of Butte, State of California, hereby declares its opposition to the Anti-Trapping Initiative; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that passage of the Anti-Trapping Initiative will adversely affect efficient, conservative, prudent and effective wildlife management practices in Butte County and throughout the State of California; and BE I"I~ FUR~I"I IIR RI?SOI,VED that the Clerk of the Board is hereby directed to transmit this resolution to Californians for People_ Pets and Vv'ildlife, for the purpose of joining the coalition opposing this extreme initiative.
