RF.,SOLtiTION REQUESTING NON-FEDERAL SPONSORSHIP
BY THE RECLAMATION BOARD FOR A
FLOOD CONTROL PROJECT IN
THE CHEROKEE CANAL WATERSHF,D
WHEREAS, the County of Butte has suffered extensive flood damages in the
Cherokee Canal area over the past twenty-five years; and
WHEREAS, the watershed contains several historic hydraulic mining operations
and the sediment loading from the tailings of these closed operations creates an excessive
maintenance burden; and
WHEREAS, commerce has been threatened due to the repeated closures of
F~~ighway 162 the principle east west arterial for the area; and
~~'HEREAS, the residents of the valley and agricultural interests have suffered
extensive damages to infrastnicture, residences, other structures and crops in each of the
declared events; and
WHEREAS, the Keclamation Board expressed an interest in becoming the non-
Federal sponsor for this project in 1996; and
WHEREAS, potential solutions to this problem are available through U.S. Army
Corps of Engineers programs and there is enough justification to support a Federal
interest in the solution to this problem.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of Supervisors, that a
food control project is necessary in this area to protect the health safety and welfare of
lh~ residents ol~ Butte County and in order to expedite a mitigation of the flooding
problem:
1. Support the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in finding a solution to this
problem.
2. Request financial support from the Reclamation Board.
3. Request the Reclamation Board to request this as a priority project to the
California Water Commission.
PASSED AND ADOPTED BY THE Butte County Board of Supervisors, State
of California this 1st day of December 1998 by the following vote:
AYES: Supervisors Beeler, Dolan, Houx, Josiassen and Chair Davis
