WHEREAS, between midnight and six o'clock in the morning on August 23, 1999, Butte County
received more than 360 lightning ground strikes. This lightning caused 47 tires in the eastern portion of
Butte County; and
WHEREAS, it was through the brave and noble efforts of the firefighters of Butte County that over
thirty of these tires were controlled on the tiret day of the lightning activity. The remaining tires eventually
culminated in six major fires burning over 34,000 acres that lasted until September ~, 1999; and
WHEREAS, these tires required a massive effort on the part of firefighters from throughout
California and the western United States. It was only through their diligent efforts in the face of extremely
adverse conditions of terrain and smoke that they were able to eventually contain and control these fires with
a minimum loss of life and property; and
WHEREAS, 49 other agencies assisted the Fire Department in a myriad of different ways. All these
brave and dedicated men and women left their homes and personal lives behind and came to the aid of Butte
County in its time of need.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Butte County Board of Supervisors recognizes
and canunends these brave men and women for their outstanding effort on behalf of the people of Butte

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED. that the Butte County Board of Supervisors sends its hea--tfelt
thanks and warmest regards to those same men and women and their f~unilies for their individual sacrifices in
our time of need.
