WHEREAS, the California State Legislature has adopted a requirement that libraries who
receive funding from the Public Library Fund must adopt policies regarding public access by
minors b}~ January 1.2000 to the Internet and to motion picture videotapes; and
WHEREAS, the Butte County Library receives filndin2 from the Public Library hued.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Butte County Baard of Supervisors
adopts the following Internet and Videotape policies for the Library.
BUTTE COl1NTY LIBRARY INTERNE"1' ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY
"I~he purpose of the library`s Internet stations is to enhance the library collection b_y providing new
search vehicles for topics of appropriate interest. Although users are allowed to l~lse the station for
recreational searching as they ]earn to navigate the World Wide Web, the central purpose is for
research and reference.
General Information
There is no access to chat rooms. or other types of interactive uses.
~ There is a charge for printing pages.
~ Users are limited to '/z hour before leaving the station open for another user, at the
discretion of the librarv staff.
~ Sign-ins will be used as needed.
~ Latecomers: If more than _S minutes late, reserved time will he lost.
Equipment may only be used for Internet access. Software must not be installed or run
from any disk drive. Equipment must not be unplugged. removed, or otherwise moditied.
Users may not attempt to reconfigure systems or software applications, or in any way
interfere with the system as currently set up.
USERS WHO DISREGARD THIS NOTICE WILL BE PROHIBITED FROM USING THE
SYSTEM.

VIDEOTAPE POLICY

Users are advised that some Internet sites contain inf-ormation, which is inaccurate, outdated,
offensive. obscene. or illegal. The Butte County Library does riot condone the use of such sites.
Internet station users must be respectful of the rights of other patrons to not be exposed to materials
and images, which they may find offensive or unsuitable. All library computers are located in
public areas where minors are present.
Therefore, staff members will request that a patron remove such an image or text from their
workstation screen if, in the staff member"s judgment, other patrons are exposed to or cannot
reasonably avoid viewing such material. Refusal to comply with such a request will result in the
loss of h~ternet use privileges.
It is the responsibility of parents and guardians to decide which sites are suitable to be viewed by
their children. We encourage parents to accompany their children when they are accessing the
hlternet.
BL!TTE COUNTY LIBNARY VIDF.OTAVE POLICY
"hhe Butte County Library maintains a collection of motion picture and informational videotapes
that have been donated by patrons for the collection. "T'he library retains the right to reject the gift
of any videotape that does not meet collection selection criteria.
Videotapes with an R rating may only be checked out b_y individuals who are 17 years of age or
older.

California. this 14thday of December by the following vote:
