State Route 70 Projects in
Butte County
At their meeting on March 22, 2018, the California Transportation Commission
(CTC) approved a $165,373,000 funding request by the Butte County Association
of Governments (BCAG) and Caltrans, to construct three major state highway
improvement projects on State Route 70 in Butte County.
These three projects will include a combination of safety and capacity
improvements that will result in the widening of State Route 70 to four lanes from
Ophir Road south of Oroville, to the Butte County Line. The projects will also
include the addition of a center left turn lane and eight-foot shoulders.
The priority to fund these projects was elevated after 13 fatalities occurred on
State Route 70 in Butte County during 2017. This brought the total number of
fatalities on State Route 70 between Oroville and Marysville to 35 since 2010.
Funding for these three projects also comes after 30 years of numerous plans and
studies by BCAG, Caltrans District 3 and the CTC, documenting the need to
construct a four-lane highway between Chico and Sacramento. Butte County is
the largest County the state not served by a four-lane highway.
Construction for the State Route 70 projects in Butte County is scheduled to begin
by the spring of 2020.
