RE: Assembly .Ioint Resolution 4 (Dahle) -SUPPORT
Dear Assembly Member Buchanan:
On behalf of the Butte County Boards of Supervisors, I am writing in support of Assembly Joint Resolution 9,
authored by Assemblyman Brian Dahle, which urges the 113th Congress to reauthorize and fund the federal
Secure Rural Schools & Community Self-Determination Act. California's rural counties and rural school
districts are facing a severe financial crisis. Unless Congress re-authorizes the Secure Rural Schools &
Community Self-Determination Act, Butte County will lose nearly $502,736 annually in federal funding. This
funding provides Butte County with vital resources to repair and maintain its roads. The Act was created to
provide a guaranteed payment option to rural counties and schools located in forested counties in light of
dramatic reductions in monies derived from timber harvesting on nations! forest lands.
Last year, Congress and president Obama extended funding for one additional year and that funding will cease
unless action is taken: The U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate continue to review a variety of
options to provide both short and long-term resolution to this issue. Nevertheless, it is imperative that the State
of California urge the 113th Congress to act immediately to fund this vital program.
We appreciate your time and consideration of this critical matter, and urge your support of AJR 9 when heazd in
the Assembly Education Committee.
Sincerely,
Bill Connelly, Chair
Butte County Board of Supervisors
