Dear Senator Boxer;
On behalf of the Butte County Board of Supervisors and the Butte County Fire Department,
thank you for the assistance your office provided during recent discussions with the Federal
Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) regarding our eligibility to receive fiu~ding from the
Staffiing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant program.
As you may recall, af#er awarding the County $2.1 million in SAFER funding, FEMA
questioned the County's ability to receive the funding because of our long standing cooperative
agreement with CAL FIRE. The FEMA legal office ultimately determined that the County was
indeed eligible to receive the funding and we are moving forward with the grant which will
allows us to rehire eleven critical f re f ghting personnel. This decision was not only tremendous
news for Butte County but for other California fire agencies that have cooperative agreements
with CAL FIRE.
Your support and the work by Stacey Smith were instrumental in our efforts to preserve the
SAFER grant funding. Thank you again for helping us ensure that our citizens are well
protected.
