A iMuwrites: Good evening Supervisor Lambert: Thank you for taking the time this evening to discuss the open position on the Butte County Fair Board. During our conversation you expressed some more background information. | hope the following will fulfill your request. To start at the beginning. | was born in San Joae, CA. My father worked at Frontier Village, which was an amusement park, he owned and operated the stagecoach ride and the burro ride for 2Oyears. Healso owned and ran cattle inthe Santa Clara Valley. K4ymother was astay at home mom. I joined 4-H when I was 9, we showed our projects at the Santa Clara County Fair. Those projects included sheep, cattle, and rabbits as well as leather craft, and other still exhibits. When | was 15 my parents and | moved to Twin Fa||a. Idaho. They opened afeed store and while living there I was also a member of 4-H and an officer in our club. I showed sheep and mules at the local fair. During those years in Idaho, I also worked part time while I attended high school and college. I attend the College of Southern Idaho where I earned my AA. When I was 21, 1 moved to Chico to complete my college education at CSUC. I have a degree in Business with a concentration in Management Information Systems. After graduation I accepted a position with a computer firm and after 26 years I am still working for the same computer department although the company is now based in Kentucky. I am truly lucky, not to have had to look for another position since. I telecommute from my home. My title is Conversion Manager. I work from 5am to 3pm, which allows me time in the day to take breaks as needed to care for our livestock and family needs. My husband and I have been married for 22 years. We live on a small farm and raise Boer goats, Show rabbits and show poultry. We have 3 children, all boys. The oldest recently graduated from Pleasant Valley High School and we have twins, who attend Bidwell Jr. High. All three of my children have been largely involved in 4-H and showing at fairs both in the livestock category and the still exhibits. These include not only the Silver Dollar Fair and the Butte County Fair but also, the California State Fair, Colusa County Fair, Tehama District Fair, and the Yuba- Sutter Fair. I even judged Rabbits in the small animal round robin at the Placer County Fair. I have also attended the Alameda County Fair many times since my sister is very involved there. Between all of my children they have shown all the species one time or another. I am an advocate for all species, and I believe they should all get their chance to be represented at the fair. I feel that my attendance at other fairs might help with some insight I could bring to the Butte County Fair. My husband and I volunteer our time as a 4-H project leaders, He is a county wide Archery leader and he even helps with maintenance at the Butte County Fair as needed. I have served on the 4-H Butte County Council and the Butte County Fair Junior Livestock Advisory Committee. I was even the PTO president for Nord Elementary School for 2 years. I am currently the Goat and Rabbit leader for our Shasta 4-H club. In the past I was the poultry leader, beef leader and the leather craft leader. In addition I am currently one of the chairs for our Butte County Small Animal Field Day and I am the Chair for the Record Book Committee. As I mentioned in my prior email, my term is up on the Butte County Fair JLA and I feel that my efforts could be better suited on the Butte County Fair Board. I feel that we in Butte County have a great little fair and as you mentioned on the phone we need to make it prosper more than one week out of the year. I have heard that the fair breaks even each year. It would be interesting to find out why more venues do not come to the fair. I know the fair used to have more events that I even attended in the past and those are no longer offered. I hope to be able to come to the board with ideas that I have observed from other fairs. Possibly get more 4-H volunteer involvement for improvements. Many 4-H members have to complete a "plan of action"to receive a Emerald Star or to be and All Star. That might be a project that a members could offer to help the fair out and earn their stars. I would like to mention while on the JLA I had an idea about replacing the sheep and goat pens from the chain link we currently have, to something safer for the animals and more user friendly for the exhibitors and spectators. My idea was to earn money not only from our Barn Benefit Dinner but my thought was that we could get pen sponsors. Each pen would have a set price and the sponsors name would be permanently affixed to the pens. This would be great for business as advertisement and for anyone who might want to donate to get their name on a placard, maybe in memory of a loved one, etc. I also suggested they have separate gold colored pens for the champions where the public and buyers could go directly to see the champion row. Many other fairs have these. The Champion Row pens could have sponsorships as well. This idea was only to be accepted if I had a detail drawings of the current layout and the proposed pens along with a detailed proposal of costs etc. The proposal had to pass the JLA,then the Livestock Committee before reaching the fair board for the final authorization. Needless to say I did not have the means or funds to hire an engineer to come to the fair and map the barns and draw up plans. I still would like to see the pen idea succeed and maybe I can help with that on a different level if I were to become a board member. The Butte County Fair is a wonderful little fair, it has a nice central location, between Sacramento and Chico. It is our own "diamond in the rough" and it would be wonderful to see it prosper and shine. I would love to have the opportunity to be a part of that decision making process. Thank you again for your time. Mrs. Sandra Toews In a message dated 12/2/2016 7:17:07 P.M. I am just checking back about the opening on the Butte County Fair board and was wondering if you have filled the position. If it is still vacant, I would still like to be considered for the opening. I believe I have a great deal to offer the fair, especially with my knowledge in both the small and large animal livestock fields. Pacific Standard Time Subj: Interested in filling the open seat on the Butte County Fair Board Dear Steve Lambert: I was informed that there is an opening on the Butte County Fair board. I would like to be considered a candidate to fill that position. I was a 4-H member for 10 years in my youth. I have children currently enrolled in the program. My children have also participated in other fairs such as the California State Fair, Colusa County Fair, and the Tehama District Fair, in not only livestock but still exhibits as well. I have held and completed my term as a Butte County 4-H council member. Currently, I am a 4-H leader and hold several committee chair positions at the county level. In addition, I have been a member of the Butte County Fair Junior Livestock Auction Advisory Committee for the past 3 years and my term there is up this December. If possible I would like the open position on the fair board. I have seen the fair from many angles: a spectator, a parent of exhibitors, a 4-H leader, a 4-H council member and committee chair, and as a JLA member. I feel like my time and knowledge would be better suited on this board. I know California fairs are struggling and I would like to be a part of keeping our little fair afloat. I am not only an advocate for livestock but I believe everyone should work for the fair as a whole, and not just for their one passion. Spectators, still exhibitors, the carnival, the attractions, vendors, livestock, 4-H and FFA members and families all have a role in the fair and all need to have equal representation. If allowed to take a seat on the board I will strive to make viable decisions for the good of the fair as a whole. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me on my cell at 530-228-1231. Thank you for your consideration. Sincerely, Mr. Sandra Toews
