I totally understand that the classes are typically undersubscribed and more disturbing to our family was that a handful of exhibitors through the years entered (and sometimes won)these classes when it was really a relative who was the breeder and care-giver and not the 4-H or FFA member. This fact is hard to police, I get it! With those two obstacles being known, I still believe this is one way to recognize the kids who feed and care for their breeding stock 2417, 365 days/year. There are the many hours all night watching animals who are ready to give birth, there are the multitudes of hours spent cleaning stalls and barns, hauling hay and feed, treating animals for diseases, trimming feet, there is the worry as they wait for the veterinarian to care for their sick animal, the countless hours fitting show strings in addition to their market animal that the majority of the kids do not have to do in the 60-120 days that they care for a market animal that someone else got through the difficult stages. I could go on and on. Please consider our request. If I have guessed correctly as to your reasons for cancelling them, I wish I could offer a solution. I believe there are many of us willing to sponsor the awards for the classes, and they really do not take too much extra time for the judge to evaluate. It is also a GOLDEN opportunity for the judge to teach the exhibitors and audience about the species, what to look for in breeding animals, etc. I believe our county fairs should be educational events as well as a place to make a little money. Thank you for your time to read this email. Pacific Standard Time Subj: Butte County Fair- Bred & Owned Classes and Breeeding Rabbit Showmanship Classes January 26, 2015 Dear Butte County Fair Board; I heard as well that the board voted on removing all the"bred and owned" classes and to not allow the Rabbit Breeding kids that win in their showmanship divisions during the rabbit show to compete in the Round Robin 2 competition. I am saddened by this news and I hope I am misinformed, but if it is true, then I respectfully request you read the following information and reconsider your decision. I know that this fair has strived to make the competition even across species for everyone. In the past, if you created a class for one livestock species you always tried to make sure that same class is offered to all the other species. Which is admirable. The breeding rabbits is where this fair falls short. Not sure if you are aware but all other species can show a breeding animal in showmanship if they so choose, and have another species entered in a market class. But in rabbits there is no class for this. The fair currently only offers showmanship to those who bring rabbit meat pens. So you are excluding an entire breeding species class. I see only two choices. One, you allow the Showmanship winners that compete during the ARBA(American Rabbit Breeders Association) show to compete in round robin, or two, you allow those kids with breeding rabbits to bring a rabbit to the fair and have those rabbits on display the entire time of the fair and compete at the same time as the meat pen exhibitors. Eliminating the showmanship class that takes place during the ARBA show altogether, basically merging the rabbit showmanship into one event during the fair. In my opinion the showmanship winners during the ARBA show is the better choice since small animal round robin usually consists of rabbits, chickens and maybe Pigmy goats, so if you add in an extra rabbit winner it gives some more competition to the group. But that is just my take on it. Competition is a good thing. For those of you who are not familiar with the Showmanship that takes place during the ARBA show it is a completely separate event. The actual rabbit show follows the ARBA standards for judging a rabbit which judges the conformation of the rabbit as it compares to the ARBA standard for the particular breed. Whereas the showmanship portion is a separate event judged by a "showmanship judge" not the ARBA judge. The youth competitors wear their 4-H whites or the FFA uniform while they compete. The competition can be as individual or as a group of 4-5, that is the judge's decision. Usually at smaller turnouts it is one-on-one. If the judge chooses to do one-on-one judging, it is a completely verbal presentation. The participant explains in detail everything you look for in a rabbit, and at the end questions are asked based on the age of the participant. This is much more in-depth and informative than when you show large livestock. Please consider making a decision to include the breeding rabbit exhibitors in the showmanship competition that allows them to compete in the round robin, just like all the other species are allowed to do. As for the "Bred and Owned" classes, I know that this year there was an uprising about someone who might have been untruthful about their animal, and if it was owned at conception. I thought this issue was resolved. I would like the board to reconsider keeping these classes at the fair. This fair relies on the honor system for pretty much everything, from still exhibits to even the market animals. The Butte County Fair does not require the current"livestock entry form"to have the animals "scrapie" tag listed on it when submitted to the fair. The fair does not even make note of the "scrapie" tag number until the market animal passes thru the scale at the fair. So basically anyone could buy and animal the day before the fair if they chose to do so. This fair does not require any bill of sale or photos of animals that are entered. They ask that the exhibitor have the animal for 60 days prior to the fair, but it does not require any proof. So the honor system is already in place for the over 250 market animals you have at the sale each year. We have all these young kids that raise their own animals and now are being "punished" because of a little controversy. These kids work very hard at raising animals all year long, not just for 60 days like the majority of the market showmen, and they should be able to show off their hard work and compete against one another, which is what the county fair is for. I would hope that if someone is untruthful about the origin of their animal, that they would have to live with that dishonesty, but why should all the other hard working kids have to suffer? Not only will you have disappointed kids, that have already bred for this 2015 fair and are looking forward to competing this year, but don't forget all the people and business who sponsor the awards for these bred and owned classes. These donors might consider twice about donating again if you take away something they are passionate about. These donors try to honor kids that go the extra mile to breed their own livestock and some of these kids even use the sires that these donors provide to them to breed their dams . Which if they win their class this promotes the donors herd as well. By dropping this class you will have somewhat of a domino effect and not only disappoint the kids that have worked hard on their breeding programs, but disappointed breeders and donors as well. Please reexamine all the facts and reconsider leaving the bred and owned class in the fair book. I did some research and found a document from another state for"bred and owned market animals", maybe the BCF could use this document as an example to meet their needs. I know the fair board has a lot on their plate, not only dealing with the livestock portion of the fair but all the other working to make the fair profitable and to keep it going year after year during the actual "fair" and throughout the rest of the year . I am sure it is not an easy task for anyone to be on the board in addition to their daily lives. I am respectfully requesting that the board please add these two items back on the February agenda for further 3 discussion and another vote. I would be happy to attend the next board meeting to help answer any further questions if that would help in any way clarify any of these two topics . Thank you for your time and consideration in these matters. We all appreciate the hard work and extra hours that you put in to your jobs to make this work for our youth and our community. Thank you. Our youth learn quite a bit raising and exhibiting a fair animal: math, language arts, public speaking, ethics, sportsmanship and many other skills as well. For our members who are able to, they have stepped up the game even more. They have decided to breed their own animals for fair instead of going to a breeder. They are learning about the care and management of the animals, Al, delivery, processing, and raising young animals. Talk about a learning curve! In a world where a lot is just handed to us, it is encouraging to see such 4 hardworking youth. This is an aspect of raising livestock that should be encouraged and nurtured. That's why we were so disheartened to learn that the board recently decided to eliminate all bred and owned classes for the upcoming 2015 Butte County Fair. I know that these are not huge classes, but I also know that the awards for these classes are sponsored. Our club has a young member who just started entering these classes last year; he has learned so much through the experience of Al, caring for the sow, the farrowing, processing, and raising. He is heartbroken that this class will not be available to him for this coming fair. I'm not sure what the reasoning behind cutting these classes is...if it's a matter of honesty, ethics, and tracking, I'm sure that there are ways to address that. Any youth or adult can choose to be unethical and go around rules; that shouldn't be a reason to take away an educational opportunity for the entire youth community. Please reconsider your decision to eliminate the bred and owned classes, if not for the 2015 fair than for the 2016. 1 am cc'ing this email to other 4-H and livestock families who may not yet be aware of this decision, and I am doing so to encourage them to also share their thoughts with those of you on the fair board.
