First, let me say that I share your concerns that the Feather River Canyon presents unique challenges to the shipment of hazardous commodities. These concerns are why we have been proactive in securing funding to enhance regional surge capabilities that can respond to rail safety incidents. We are in the process of purchasing new Type II hazardous material emergency response units for deployment throughout the state. These units will be deployed in a similar fashion to our Cal OES fire engines; with local government taking responsibility for staffing. To support staffing concerns we are working with our Local Emergency Planning Committees to provide local training specific to the response to rail safety incidents. Ultimately, we intend to join with emergency managers and First Responders within Butte County and the surrounding region to conduct table top exercises to enhance the readiness to respond to the evolving issues posed by rail safety incidents. While these efforts are underway, we are identifying future equipment, training and exercise requirements. We look forward to working with public safety officials and emergency managers within Butte County to get the input necessary to help frame those activities. Cal OES key priorities in this effort include building additional hazmat team surge capability, providing multi-discipline table top exercises for local, state, federal and industry stakeholders, providing flammable liquids training facilities, and providing additional hazmat training for First Responders. Once again, let me assure you that I understand the concerns you have raised, I look forward to our teams continuing to work collaboratively to protect and serve the residents of Butte County.
