Butte County is among the top 10 counties with the highest cost of smoking per resident and the highest per resident direct healthcare costs. • Per California resident, the cost of smoking is $487 per year; per Butte County resident, the cost is 829 per year. These are costs per resident, costs that all of us pay in the form of taxes that pay for healthcare services. • The costs per smoker are, of course, higher. The costs for Butte County smokers are $5,773 per smoker, compared with $4,603 per California smoker. Direct costs include expenditures for hospital care, ambulatory care, prescription drugs, home health care, and nursing home services. Indirect costs include lost productivity due to smoking- related illness. • Butte's cost of smoking is $181,708,000 of which $96,004,000 is derived from direct costs and $85,704,000 is derived from lost productivity. • Why are the costs higher in Butte County? One reason is that Butte County has a higher adult smoking rate than California as a whole. According to the California Health Interview Survey (2011-12), Butte County had an 18.2% adult smoking rate, versus 13.8% for California as a whole. Other Facts • There are 19 smoking-related underlying causes of death. These include 10 types of cancer, 7 types of cardiovascular disease, and 2 types of respiratory disease. • Smoking costs Californians $21 for every dollar of cigarette tax revenue generated. That means that for every dollar generated by the cigarette tax, $21 needs to be generated to cover the costs of smoking. This is an enormous gap that taxpayers have to fill. • The healthcare costs of smoking are $9.23 per pack. The indirect costs are an additional $8.23 per pack, for a total of$17.46 per pack. • Almost 15%of all deaths in California in 2009 were attributed to smoking. • Smoking accounts for: o 17 times the deaths from AIDS o 5 times the deaths from diabetes o 5 times the deaths from influenza and pneumonia o 3 times the deaths from unintentional injuries o 3 times the deaths from Alzheimers
