Supervisors,
just reviewed the Status Report for the EBHB Sports Complex development on your agenda
Tuesday and saw that Friends of Butte Creek were included as supporters of the project. We know
very little about the project and have certainly not endorsed it. We do support protecting the riparian
areas of Butte Creek but are particularly concerned about encouraging public use of these areas. Just
last year we spent considerable time and energy cleaning up homeless camps just upstream of
Highway 99 on the CDFW Ecological Preserve. We generally do not support any further development
along Butte Creek as the associated destruction of native vegetation, the pollution from people and
vehicles, environmental health concerns for sewage, water extraction from the groundwater and the
potential for encouraging development that may impact Butte Creek, all present elements of the plan
that we would not support. This area is protected from flooding from Butte Creek by a levee that could
easily be breached in flooding events. This levee restricts the channel capacity of Butte Creek and as
we have seen, the potential for greater storm events is something we all need to keep in mind.
Development in floodplains is not a wise direction for our society.
Please keep these concerns in mind.
Thank you for your time.
