I am also Latina-- my grandparents settled in the Oroville area as farmworkers, and I know that Butte county relies on agriculture, and agricultural workers, as key players in the local economy. I am truly shocked and disappointed to think that an area that harbors so much diversity could even consider passing an anti-sanctuary ordinance. I know Butte county is truly beautiful, and also struggling economically, and I make a point of spending time in the region-- like many people, I think olive oil or almond products from the region are great gifts, and love seeing the wildflowers on table top mountain. I also encourage friends who have never been to the area to go. But I will not travel or spend a dime in a county that passes this kind of dog-whistle racist, ugly resolution, and will ask friends and family to also boycott the area. Agricultural families in Butte depend on immigrants to do work that others do not want to do. Parents, regardless of where they are from, will always do whatever it takes to give their children the best possible future. Immigration is historically a part of this country's fabric, and hateful rhetoric will not stop it. Anti- sanctuary policies like the one you are considering only serve to make immigrants and people of color more fearful of the police, less willing to speak out when they are victims of crime, workplace exploitation, and even make parents afraid to take their children to the doctor or to school. Shame on any county that passes such a hate-filled statement. History will judge, and consumers will be heard with their dollars going elsewhere. Autumn Gonzalez i
