To the members of the board of supervisors. Thank you for your attention to this message.
I wanted to take a moment to share with you my story and experience as a Butte County employee. I started
working for DESS in February 2006. As a single father with two children I chose the position as it afforded me
weekends off to be with my children and affordable and decent benefits. During the last few years my income
has decreased steadily. So much so that I have had to remove my daughter from my health care plan as my
monthly health premiums have steadily increased. She now is a client of DESS as she can not afford health
insurance. In the past few years as a county employee I have willingly given concessions in order to help my
community during hard financial times. During that time the county has hired a new CAO at a significant
increase in salary over the previous CAO. County employees have seen the head of HR receive 5% raises.
Myself and my coworkers in DES S have seen steadily increasing workloads including the addition of an
Affordable Care Act call center that the county has received extra funding for and it is my understanding we
will be required to assist clients in not only our own community, but we will be supporting other counties that
do not have a call center. My family has been in Butte County for 25 years. Unfortunately myself and my
coworkers will be forced to look for competitive wage opportunities in other counties and possibly other states,
uprooting our families from the community we have happily called home for many years. I ask for your help not
only as an employee, but as a proud resident and concerned constituent. Please take the opportunity you have to
show our community that our elected officials are committed to investing in our community and in those that
diligently serve their constituents. By offering us a fair contract, you will be making a great investment in the
future of our community. Thank you for your time. Sincerely,
Martin McReynolds
