Members of the Board of Supervisors,
I am writing you to personally tell you as a county employee of DESS how this will affect my family . The
increases in my insurances and the minimal wages in our department has us now as the working poor. I am
aware from our union meetings of the fact Butte County is one of the lowest paid county in California. I have
worked for the county for going on to 8 years. I came to work for Butte County thinking this job would be good
benefits and that my family would have good medical benefits. Now I can't say that anymore.
I own a home that I pay taxes on in Butte County and I am a member of this community I have put my money
into this community and have been a loyal hard working employee . Standing by my employer through their
"survival" period these last few years. I am now wanting to know what are they going to do for me for all this
time I have worked hard and stood beside them. It's time to compensate me and all the County Employees of
DESS. Do they not value me as an employee???? They sure have money for maintenance of buildings at a tune
of at least $9 million dollars. What about the maintenance of their employees??? I have had to go from a
HMO insurance plan and go to a PPO insurance plan the last few years. Well now I have more Dr. bills
outside of my regular bills like my mortgage payment, car payment, etc. I now have a MRI bill, dentist bill,
vision bill, ultra sound bill to Enloe and a lab bill I have to make monthly payments on.
I have been so stressed out over the increase of 29.7 % in our insurance that I took my car to carmaxx in
Roseville, CA to have it appraised to see about selling it to buy a older car w/less to no payment. I am also
considering selling my home which my family has owned since 1985. I just don't think I will be able to make
all my bills with no increase in income and the increase in the health insurance coming. I have tried to keep the
little money in Butte County that I do have, but how much longer will it be until myself and other employees
are standing in line to apply for Medi-Cal and Cal Fresh ourselves. There are many employees that are already
on aid right now. Some employees will have to look for employment elsewhere as it will not be worth working
any longer. Yet the county can afford to hire a big time Lawyer from the Bay Area to fight against the
employees to not give us anything and pay him $275.00 an hr. not including travel, meals, etc. Sounds pretty
fair right? Don't we have HR representative that does what he is being paid to do?? I hope that as our elected
officials there is something that can be done by yourself to look out for the employees that come to work and
have sacrificed and stood by the County all this time. Please hold the county accountable for the sake of the
employees and their families.
Thank you for your time.
