It was on this date three years ago that an oil train, disaster killed 47 people in Lac Megantic, Quebec. Since then there have been 14 major oil train derailments and fires, yet these dangerous trains still bring millions of galllons of toxic, explosive crude oil down the Feather River Canyon and through Chico and Oroville. Each year to commemorate the solemn anniversary of the Lac Megantic accident dozens of cities have participated in Stop Oil Train activities during the week of remembrance. For us in Chico this will mean premiering a documentary called On the Wrong Track by Paul Rhea, a film about oil trains in the Feather River Canyon, an issue that concerns us all. The film will be shown at the Pageant Theater July 101h at 7pm and there will be another short film as well as a panel discussion that evening. We would appreciate it if you could attend the filmwith us on July 10th. This is a very real concern for everyone who learns about the risks of oil trains through our unstable canyons and populated cities. As,you are no doubt aware, an oil spill into the Feather River could contaminate the drinking water for 22 million Californians. More and more Butte County people will be looking to you for leadership. If you, aren't able to attend the public showing of On the Wrong Track we can come and show it to you at your office. We will be contacting you over the next few weeks to set up those appointments. We want to review the safety concerns of Emergency Services and the publlic that are not being adequately addressed and ask your support for a moratorium on the oil trains (being sought by the governors of both Oregon and Washington.) Sincerely, Chris Nelson, RN, former PHN, Nurse Practitioner On behalf of Chico 350
