As a former long time resident of Butte Creek Canyon I am aware of issues living in the Canyon that need attention such as: • Evacuation in times of fires and flooding o Honey Run Road, is the main entrance/exit for BCC. It is two lane, narrow and often blocked during fires and floods o Other roads (to the Ridge): Honey Run one lane, windy, poorly maintained goes to Paradise; Centerville one lane, dirt, poorly maintained, goes to Magalia o Evacuating to Paradise and Magalia puts a burden on Ridge evacuations. • Access to water for residential use o Residential water is primarily from wells o If neighbors have same water source can have problems with wells drawing. Wells quit drawing if one neighbor over uses water. In the area I lived and other areas when the wells quit drawing we had to put in storage tanks. When that failed we drilled deeper wells and put in complicated water filtration systems. This was done at the cost of thousands of dollars for each of us. • Road safety: Residential and Recreational use o There are over 400 residents in the Canyon which adds up to several road trips per residence daily. o Commute traffic has increased over the years. o vehicles parked for recreational use on the sides of the road have increased. o People often drive recklessly on the windy narrow roads. o The wild animal kills has increased o Cattle have escaped from fenced pastures posing a serious danger to vehicle traffic. • Protection of Butte Creek and the Canyon eco-systems from overpopulation: o Animal migration of deer, bear, cougars, birds (i.e. Wild Chinook Salmon/Bald Eagles). o Butte Creek and seasonal springs, creeks, ponds are polluted with over grading from overdevelopment. o Fire protection Thank you for considering the Butte Creek Canyon Overlay as a source for protecting it's future for all citizens of Butte County and it's visitors. And,thank you also to the residents and friends fo Butte Creek Canyon who have over the years worked so hard to do the same. Very truly yours, Caroline J.
