Subject: Response to the concerns raised by Thomas Wahl at the Board of Supervisors Meeting
Good Afternoon!
At the November 12 Board of Supervisors meeting, Mr. Thomas Wahl, during the public comment portion of the
meeting, expressed concerns about the cost of AIDS medications, how the Health Department was distributing vaccines,
and how he was no longer able to be seen as a patient at the University of California San Francisco. You received a copy
of my response to him. On January 14, 2014 Mr. Wahl returned to the BOS meeting and wanted the Health Department
to make Rite Aide to accept Medicaid, complained that he could no longer be seen at UC Davis and expressed concerns
about the type of vaccines we do and do not carry. Since Mr. Wahl's concerns seemed to be changing, I thought it best
to contact him directly to find out how we could help him.
My Director of Nursing, Alice Kienzle, was able to connect with Thomas Wahl last week. She talked with him at length
about his health issues and how he was currently navigating the health care system. Mr. Wahl has a primary care
provider and we provided him with information about the services he could receive from public health. We mailed him
our LowCost NoCost Resource Guide as well as information about the 211 system that can connect him with community
programs and services such as basic needs, nutrition, cooking etc. We explained how the change to managed care had
created some problems during the changeover, and also how Adult Dental Services will be restored in May 2014. He
specifically stated that he had no needs from the Public Health Department at this time, so Alice gave him her direct line
as well as the direct line for our nurse supervisor in Chico for his use if he has needs in the future. He was advised that
any time he was having trouble getting health care services to call and we would get him connected to those services.
I believe we have done all we can for him for now. Since his issues seem to change every time we hear from him, we
have provided him with two people to contact and their direct phone numbers to assist him. If there is anything else
you would like me to do, please let me know and I will be happy to do it.
