Sooner or later, these fire stations will need to be reopened, and ANY SAVINGS WILL BE LOST IN THE re-STARTUP COSTS. My goodness, but budget cutting is less and less pragmatic, and certainly services are in decline for us folks who don't live in urban centers proper, even though we continue to pay property taxes. Platt Mtn Fire Station 23 serves Highway 32 up towards Lake Almanor & Chester, and is a very busy highway throughout the year. It is not overly dramatic to say that lives WILL be lost if Station 23 is allowed to close. The response time will simply be too long for those residents that find themselves in harms way because of fire, road accidents, downed power lines, medical emergencies, etc. And because of our often inclement, snowy weather, fire trucks from Chico may not even be able to reach those in the snow needing assistance. THAT is a scary thought. Seems to me that, if services decline, our property taxes should likewise be lowered to reflect reduced services. If I am not getting services, why should I subsidize services for those who live in urban areas? The urban areas certainly don't seem to be interested in subsidizing services for rural folk. r CAO L./ t
