Burke, MD 993 Woodland Avenue Chico, CA 95928 RE: Your letter dated August 15, 2018 regarding Bicycle Safety on Cohasset Road Dear Mr. Burke: Thank you for your letter sent to Maurine Kirk, Butte County Board of Supervisors, regarding bicycle safety on Cohasset Road. Your letter was forwarded to me as the roadway issues you discuss are within the jurisdiction of Butte County Public Works. Of course, I was greatly saddened as well by the news of this unfortunate bicycle vs. automobile collision. As a bicycle rider myself, these types of incidents really bring home just how vulnerable bicyclists are while on the roadways. We have requested a copy of the traffic collision report from CHP, and in the meantime we are researching the flashing light concept you presented, as well as other possible additional safety measures. I have an appointment set up to discuss this incident, and the counter measures you proposed with the Chico CHP commander later this week. Once I have more information, I will reach out to you to discuss. Again, thank you for your letter and your concern. Please accept my sincere condolences on the loss of your friend. Cycling is a popular recreational activity.ln.this area. The till climb to tho COhaSset store is a great workout because of its gradual 6 to 7 ipercent elevation gain. However, "the narrows" is a dangerous section Of;road becaus of narrowed pavement, limited visibility because of curves, ands legal speed of up 55 miles per hour. I believe this area needs to be made 8,aferfortyclist . Various options thatmight be considered include; •widening and straightening this 8ention of road, reducing the speed limit in this area,Ibr installihg speed.bumps. Of course, upgrading the road would be very expensVe, monitoring and enforcing speed limits would be difficult, and placement of speed bumps would not be reasonable. - - _ I would suggest art alternative: placement-of a solar powered pole with flashing lights, on both ends of this section of road, that could be manually triggered by a passing cyclist, with the lights flashing for 6 minutes, until the cyclist had a chance to pass through this section, giving motorists a warning to stpw down and allQw cyclists their space_ I would appreciate your thoughts and help with this request.
