Clarissa and Shari,
I am writing on behalf of Simplicity Village,a project being enacted by the Chico Housing Action Team(CHAT). While
this organization has long been involved in efforts to help Chico's many homeless residents,CHAT aims to expand
beyond short-term solutions to build "villages"for the homeless. These gated villages would feature tiny homes with
shared kitchen, dining and laundry facilities and provide permanent homes to the those in need. Bob Trausch,CHAT
board member, points to the success of communities like these that have been built in cities such as Portland,Oregon, and
Olympia, Washington, where as a result, "crime has gone down, hospital visits have declined, and areas get cleaner."
CHAT has a comprehensive proposal ready for adoption by the City and the County to house the most amount of people
in the least amount of time: Simplicity Village. This project offers a viable, ethical and sustainable response to the Chico
housing crisis and promises to:
• Implement a proven structure including tenant buy-in, self-policing, and shared tenant maintenance
• Reduce the amount of homeless people in the streets
• Cut back on trash in local parks and creek sides
• Save money: several studies indicate that cities can save millions by housing the homeless compared with unpaid
hospital visits and incarceration expenses
Offer community education. CHAT is helping more citizens understand the plight faced by countless homeless
people,who are often victimized, abused,and/or forced into their position due to job loss, family crisis, lack of
proper insurance, long-term illness of themselves or family members, and many other factors
