We wish to offer our aid for unclaimed livestock and other farm animals affected by the fire. We have 30 years of experience housing and handling a wide array of farm animals and operate a 600-acre sanctuary with 500 rescued cows, pigs, chickens, turkeys, rabbits, sheep, and goats. Today we received word that unclaimed farm animals(approximately 20% of those at Gridley) have or will soon be moved to an impound yard by Butte County Animal Control. We are concerned about the disposition of these animals. We know the devastation from this fire has been enormous. The loss of human and animal life is incomprehensible, and our hearts go out to everyone affected. We have opened our bed and breakfast inn to evacuees free or charge and are currently housing 10, along with their companion animals. We have made several trips to evacuation centers(for humans and animals)and to the Butte Humane Society's food pantry delivering more than $10,000 worth of supplies. And we have offered to intake farm animals for permanent placement at our shelter or in private, pre-screened adoptive homes. We have been met with different stories; this confusion and misinformation are normal during a disaster of this scope, so we felt it important to address the Board of Supervisors, in the hopes you can help. While the unclaimed dogs and cats will find forever homes, we are concerned that the livestock and other farm animals 1 will be sold for slaughter. We feel strongly they deserve as much of a chance at a permanent loving home as the dogs and cats, and we can help with that. We are offering to help intake or place unclaimed farm animals (chickens, sheep, goats, cows, turkeys, pigs, miniature donkeys/horses)so that Butte County Animal Control can focus on dogs, cats, and horses.
