Subject: Butte County Animal Control Camp Fire Shelters and Feral Cats
Hello all,
Please feel free to use the below message to respond to emails or phone calls that you may have received in
regards to Butte County Animal Control shelter operations and/or Camp Fire cats being euthanized. After
attending this morning's animal shelter planning meeting, I learned that a shelter in Stanislaus County posted on
Facebook about euthanizing animals. Stanislaus shelters do not have any animals from Butte County, but it may
have caused some confusion locally.
E-mail Response, RE: Cat/Animal Euthanasia
Since the Camp Fire started, Butte County Animal Control has been caring for and sheltering thousands of
animals. Butte County Animal Control does not euthanize animals or coordinate with other facilities for this
purpose.
Most of the animals in our temporary emergency shelters have owners and we are working with them to identify
long term sheltering options. Owners have four primary options:
1. Pick up their animal. We can provide supplies, including: feed, bowls, leashes, crates, etc.
2. Get connected with a temporary foster home for their animal. A Facebook group has been established to
connect people who need a foster home for their animal with people who are willing and able to foster:
www.facebook.com/groups/campfirefosteranimalconnection/
3. Transfer their animal to a private boarding facility.
i
4. Lastly, if animal owners come to the difficult decision that they can no longer keep their animal, they
can surrender their animal to our shelter and we will facilitate the adoption process for them.
In regards to cats considered feral, our shelter had approximatelyl 5 feral cats. The plan for these cats, in
coordination with the Town of Paradise, is to sterilize the cats and return them to local cat colonies.
Additionally, there has been some concern that Butte County Animal Control has not posted photos of all lost
Camp Fire cats. All of the lost animals that have been rescued and sheltered by Butte County Animal Control
and NVADG have their photos posted on the website (www.campfirerescuedanimals.com). There were many
unauthorized animal rescue groups that entered the fire area and took cats. These groups took cats to shelters
outside of Butte County. When they do this, they are working outside of our tracking system making it
impossible for us to provide information on those animals. If people don't see their animal on the website, we
encourage them to click the"resources"tab. The resources page lists some of the possible shelters that these
unauthorized groups may have taken animals to.
I hope this helps to clarify any concerns or questions you have about Butte County Animal Control operations.
Thank you,
Lisa
