HomeMy WebLinkAboutEmail from Roxanne Barish - Butte Creek Canyon Overlay Zone Menchaca, Clarissa From: Roxanne Barish <roxannebarish@aol.com> Sent: Monday, April 16, 2018 9:55 PM To: BOS District 4 Cc: Clerk of the Board Subject: Butte Creek Canyon Overlay To Whom It May Concern: I am writing to show my support for the Butte Creek Canyon Overlay. I feel very strongly that the overlay should be implemented for the following reasons: 1)Protection of water quality and quantity. As we all are aware, water quality and quantity are growing issues not only in our towns, but around the world. The four years of severe drought California suffered recently has made us painfully aware how we need to work to preserve this precious resource. The Overlay will help to preserve the quality of water upon which the natural environment and the residents depend by preserving the natural watershed and the amount of water needed to sustain life in the canyon. 2)Fire hazards. The past fire season in California showed us how climate change and population density can have disastrous consequences. We need to be sensitive to population density in closed in areas such as Butte Creek Canyon. The Overlay would help limit growth in an area that is vulnerable to fire. 3)Balance of nature in the canyon and preservation of open spaces. Having spent the past 38 years in Paradise and Chico, the natural environment has greatly influenced me and been a large reason I have chosen to make this area my home. While it would be unfair to wish for limited growth in Butte County, I do believe planned growth is essential. There are tough problems we will have to face as both Paradise and Chico grow, but we must maintain the gems of our county, Butte Creek Canyon being one of them. The balance of nature and the preservation of wildlife in this canyon is more important now than ever before, as these natural spaces are disappearing. People need these spaces to share and while some are fortunate to call areas around Butte Creek Canyon their home(incidentally, I'm not one of the lucky few), we need to limit growth there. If we don't, the wildlife and natural habitat will be adversely affected and the open spaces and natural beauty will be lost to future generations. Thank you for reading my letter and realizing there are so many who wish to preserve this natural space. Sincerely, Roxanne Barish Butte County Resident
