News Release
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Friday, September 13, 2013, 12pm

Oroville,CA—On September 18, 2013 at 3pm,join the Butte County Department of Water and Resource
Conservation as they unveil an innovative 55" multi-touch screen at the Butte County Library in Oroville.
A second touch screen will be unveiled at the Gateway Science Museum when it opens on September
21, 2013. The multi-touch screen allows the public to explore the Northern Sacramento Valley's land
and water resources.

A partnership between Butte County Department of Water and Resource Conservation, The Gateway
Science Museum, the Department of Water Resources, and Ideum, developed the touch screens that
allow multiple users to explore maps and photos describing watersheds, geology, groundwater, climate,
and land and water use from Redding to south of Williams. This new piece of technology makes
information about our region's water, and the industries and communities dependent on it, accessible
to young and old. Users can learn something new about the crops grown in our region, the geology of
the Sutter Buttes or Table Mountain, the salmon run on Butte Creek, restoration projects on the
Sacramento River, or how groundwater is used and moves through the system. Various mapping layers
have a set of hot spots (or points of interest)that highlight features related to land and water use
throughout the Northern Sacramento Valley.
"Water is one of the most critical interests for our region. Providing people with an easy and cutting
edge way to learn about water resources strengthens our community"said Supervisor Bill Connelly.
Butte County was awarded grant funds from the California Department of Water Resources through
Proposition 50 to conduct The Lower Tuscan Aquifer Monitoring, Recharge and Data Management
Project. An important component of this project was public education and outreach. The multi-touch
screen water exhibit was created to take a unique and interactive approach at educating the
community.
"The partnership between Gateway Science Museum and Butte County towards the development and
deployment of this custom touch table exhibit represents an achievement that will benefit our region,
by delivering watershed information in a format that is unique and engaging!" said Renee Renner,
Executive Director, Gateway Science Museum.

About The Lower Tuscan Aquifer Project
The Lower Tuscan Aquifer Monitoring, Recharge and Data Management Project was a scientific
investigation led by the Butte County Department of Water and Resource Conservation with a
consulting team from Brown and Caldwell. The project developed data and analytical tools to improve
our understanding of the regional aquifer. Results advanced our knowledge of groundwater recharge,
aquifer properties, how streams interact with groundwater, and how pumping activities may impact the
aquifer. The project was completed June 30, 2013 and was funded under the California Water Security,
Clean Drinking Water, Coastal and Beach Protection Fund of 2002 (Proposition 50), administered by the
State of California, Department of Water Resources.
A general overview of the Tuscan Aquifer Project can be found online. A full list of resources for the
Tuscan Aquifer Project can be found on the Department of Water and Resource Conservation website.
