Now that the dust has settled on the national election, we are optimistic that the future will be positive for Sierra, Pacific and for the nation. Although the U.S,. Senate and House of Representatives experienced little change, we are also affected by elections at the state and local levels. Here are some statewide results in the three primary states where we operate—CA, WA, and WI. California: The only statewide election this year(besides voter initiatives)was for the U.S.Senate seat vacated by outgoing Senator Barbara Boxer. That seat was won by sitting Attorney General Karnala Harris who easily beat fellow Democrat Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez(California uses a top-two primary system). In the U.S.House of Representatives, although the results are not yet final, the makeup of the CA congressional delegation is likely to remain the same—39 Democrats, and 14 Republicans. The State Senate changed as Democrats improved their mar-gin by one, giving them a 26-14 edge over Republicans. in the Assembly, Democrats picked up two seats which will give thern a 2/3 majority when they return to the Capitol in December for the next two-year session. In addition, voters approved 12 of 17 statewide voter initiatives. Washington. Democratic governor Jay Inslee easily won reelection, beating Republican Bill Bryant by 10 percentage points. The makeup of the U.S. House of Representatives remained the same with Democrats lidding six seats and Republicans four. In the important race for Commissioner Of Public Lai-ids, Democrat Hilary Franz easily ousted Republican Steve McLaughlin. The person in that position has significant influence over the amount of timber that is sold by the state, and over forestry regulations oil private lands. The balance of representation in the State Senate and House remained intact with the Republicans holding a bare minimum majority, while Democrats retained control of the State House of Representatives, Initiative Measure 1433 pertaining to minimum wages and sick leave passed, but Measure 732 requiring a tax on consumption or generation of electricity generated by the consumption of fossil fuels failed, Wisconsin,Wisconsin proved to be a pivota I`state for President-Elect DonalclTrump. The state had supported the Democratic nominee in the four previous presidential races, but made a major shift this election to support the Republican nominee. The balance of power in the U.S, House of Representatives remained the same with Republicans retaining five seats, while Democrats held on to three. Meanwhile,Republicans picked up two, seats in the State Senate, and one seat in the Assembly, holding firm majorities in each house. In summary, the nation is about to experience a major shift in political priorities.Sierra Pacific will be working hard to assure that our voice is heard as America transitions to new leadership. I Would like to share with you how energy drinks almost cost me my life. After our first chiid was born, I was not getting enough sleep and soon found myself drinking 2-3 cans of energy drinks each day as a way to stay energized. It never Occurred to me that the warning iabel on those cans riot to exceed 2 servings a day would lead to such a scary, life- changing event. One night, I suffered such excruciating abdominal pain that I had to check myself jo into the local emergency room. The doctors soon discovered the cause: over as period of time, the ingredients in the energy drinks had weakened my stomach lining to the point that it lead to an infection. I was hospitalized for a total of seventeen clays; the first 9 of those without food or water in order to cleanse my system. After the -id awoke to more pain. The surgeon cleansing, I went through a six-hour Surgery ar told t-ne that if I had waited 2 more hours before checking in, I couid have died. My rife will never be the same. I wouldjust like to say that after alI the pain and stress 4 it caused my family and me, afong with the medical bills and wages lost, ti-iat it's not worth it. If my story can prevent just one person from going through what I went through, it will make my day. Remember...think before you drink. SPOTLIGHT ON SUCCESS : TANNER ESTES COORDINATES SAFETY IN QUINCY Tanner Estes feels right at home in Quincy, CA. Born in Fall River Mills, CA, a small town nestled between the Sierra Nevadas and Cascades, Tanner grew up in Redding before heading off in 20 10 to pursue a degree in Business Management at the University of Nevada, Reno. Quincy is really a perfect blend of all three places: Fall River, Redding and Reno and therefore feelsjust like home. Before settling in Quincy, Tanner first began his career with Sierra Pacific Industries as a SUMmer intern at the Anderson plant. In 2012, lie had the opportunity to spend his Summer working clean-Up at the Anderson sawmill as well as the cogen, dry kilns and planer. Tanner was gaining well-rounded experience across all the operations of the Anderson manufacturing facility while earning a summer paycheck. Tanner returned to UNR and was invited to come back and intern in the Summer of 2013. That summer, lie worked the log yard as well as the unscrambler. This gave him a solid foundation in understanding the vast scope of sawmill production,. nA During the 2013-14 school year,Tanner was able to apply the production environment principals he had learned to his studies in Business Management. Being able to Couple the academic aspect with the practical experience lie had been gaining was an opportunity that Tanner was grateful to have. Tanner returned to Anderson during the summer of 2014. This time, lie was placed on the maintenai'-ice crew as a Millwright Trainee and so began learning yet another aspect of sawmill operations. The following Summer found Tanner in Quincy for the first time. Fle was placed as a r .. Millwright on the construction crew. Tanner graduated UNR "THERE ARE LOTS in December 2015 and a Supervisor Trainee OF OPPTUNITIES OR opportunity took him AND REALLY ARE NO back to 00ncy in LIMITS ON WHERE January 2016.
