The Tricolored blackbird was historically distributed throughout most of the Central Valley, adjacent foothills, coastal ranges and southern California. Habitat types required by this species include riparian, marsh, and agricultural fields. Tricolored blackbirds are medium-sized, nesting in dense colonies. Pursuant to Section 2073 of the Fish and Game Code, the Commission has forwarded the petition to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife for its review and recommendation. The Commission will consider taking emergency action to list the Tricolored blackbird as an endangered species at its December 3, 2014, meeting in Van Nuys. Interested parties may contact Ms. Helen Birss, Habitat Conservation Planning Branch Chief, California Department of Fish and Wildlife, 1416 Ninth Street, Suite 1260, Sacramento, CA 95814, or telephone 916.653.9834, for information on the petition or to submit information to the Department relating to the petitioned species.
