Subject: Oil Trains in Feather River Canyon and Chico, CA
I live in Chico, CA and have observed a very long train carrying crude going through town. Because of the history of
violations by Union Pacific, the history of derailments by oil tank cars and the consequences, I am very concerned about
the safety of such trains passing through Chico. The tracks are right on the boundary of the California State University of
Chico, multiple apartment buildings and residential housing. If there is a derailment with burning and explosions, there
will be severe loss of life and damage in Chico.
In the Feather River Canyon, the consequences are also very severe. There could be contamination of the Feather River
and Lake Oroville which is a water source for the whole state. Last year, there was a derailment and corn was spilled into
the river. This had benign consequences but if it was a large oil spill, it would be disastrous.
I am asking that trains bearing oil be barred from traveling through Feather River Canyon and the town of Chico.
Sincerely,
Lois Olson
