Thank you for your recent correspondence concerning the proposed closure of Bidwell Mansion State Historic
Park.
As a lover of history, I have a deep appreciation and commitment for the value of our California State Parks. I
would love to see them preserved not only for today but for the benefit of future generations. As the old saying
goes, "those who fail to learn from the lessons of history are doomed to repeat them."
It is surely a loss to the community and the many thousands who may come and visit this site, which pays tribute
to the history of the people who have built the community where it is located. Bidwell Mansion pays tribute to
John and Annie Bidwell whose pioneer spirit built Chico and much of the North Valley into what it is today. It
attracts nearly 37,400 visitors and as you know is adjacent to California State University, Chico and is often the
first thing that welcomes students and visiting parents when they visit Chico. It is a symbol of Chico.
As Vice-Chairman of the Assembly Budget Committee I have worked tirelessly the last three tough budget
years to come up with solutions to sustained funding for our parks. I am working right now with Assembly
members Huffman and Jefferies on funding options.
Thank you for your comments, as your representative in the California State Assembly, I do consider preserving
and protecting our State Historic Sites as one of my highest priorities. Please be assured that I will continue to
work to make this a priority for the California Legislature as well.
Respectfully,
NIELSEN
