As decisions are made about where exactly these funds could be allocated for maximum effect, it is helpful to hear from you about what projects and programs are most important to our Northern California Congressional District. We are now facing a period of dire economic conditions that warrant timely and decisive action from government and elected officials. While I support a targeted stimulus measure to provide incentives for increased investment and job creation and to address the continuing crisis in the housing market, I am concerned that many of the government spending initiatives being considered will not stimulate the economy and will lack the oversight necessary to ensure that the taxpayers' money is being used effectively. With regard to funding requests, the legislation did not include specific project allocations and the disbursement of funds is at the discretion of the federal and state agencies receiving funding. I would encourage you to contact the agencies responsible for these funds concerning possible projects in our area. In addition, there is likely to be a second opportunity to secure funding for infrastructure projects when Congress considers a reauthorization of highway construction and water development projects later this year. AIthough I am not convinced that infrastructure spending would be effective as an immediate economic stimulus measure, I fully support fiscally responsible investment in improving our nation's infrastructure and other public service projects for the future. I will continue to advocate for funding of infrastructure projects that serve the national interest as part of the traditional authorization and appropriations process.
