Tuesdays and am unable to attend your meetings, | vvnu|d like to use this e-mail tncommunicate with the Board regarding
this critical subject.
Every month in my dental practice I see patients whose mouths were devastated by drug use. During the course of
restoring their teeth we often talk about what happened over the years, what drugs were involved, and how they got
started. Many, if not most, used (or still use) marijuana. The notion of it being "harmless" is exactly what a young person
looking to experiment wants to hear. The young user perceives no harm being done, which then opens the door for
experimentation with more potent drugs. The morbidity from these more significant drugs is frightening. But the gateway
drug was marijuana.
Having gnnvvn up in Chico, | know many classmates and friends that started using marijuana in high school or earlier.
Some of those potentially productive individuals continued and became consumed by their drug use as adults. They either
lived short lives, nrare virtual shells nfthe people they used tnbe.
The studies linking marijuana use to decreased brain development in young adults are well researched and accepted. The
studies showing a lack of motivation resulting from marijuana use are also well-founded, and for years have been
observed in the population that routinely uses marijuana. Marijuana is addictive, and can lead to further drug use. As a
county, as a community, and as a society, we must do all that we can to limit the harm that marijuana creates.
Some other California counties look at marijuana as a potential tax windfall. I encourage you as Supervisors to avoid this
tremendous lowering of societal standards, and limit any and all commercial marijuana proposals. Proposition 64 provides
mechanisms to grow recreational marijuana, and I would urge you to limit those six-plant grows to indoors. Butte County
will survive just fine without commercial marijuana tax revenues. And local government will be setting a higher standard in
regards tnhealthcare, crime, and expected societal attitudes.
