From:Jean Andrews (mailto:andrews, jeanlouise @gma ii.com] Sent: Monday,June 22, 2015 8:09 AM To.Sweeney, Kathleen; Hahn, Paul Subject- Funding for Chico Library Dello---I would like to respectfully request that the budget that will be passed tomorrow include adequate funding for the Chico library to maintain its current hours and not have to close Mondays and reduce hours on the other days. As a lifelong supporter of libraries, a member of the Friends of the Chico Library, and a frequent user of the library, I have been appalled by the current City Council's inexplicable and indefensible attitude toward the library and its shameful failure to meet its civic responsibility. You no doubt are aware that at least one council member seems to think that it is just another community group begging for money instead of a key governinental entity, an integral part of community life supported largely by taxpayer funds that are supplemented by contributions from groups like the Friends and many hours of free labor from volunteers. Yes, the Chico, branch is open more hours than the others--that's because of the greater population it serves and the services it offers. Cutting those hours would be a serious detriment and harm that population, which includes all ages and socioeconomic levels. Please make sure that the library can continue to do its great work by funding it for the current level of service. 'thank you. Your support today will show a continuing belief in the value of libraries to mankind. Although 1 no longer live in Chico, that library was and still is an important factor in my life. I lived in Chico from 1969 until 2007. I was more than just a volunteer. I served three years as President of the Chico Friends of the Library through the major financial turmoil years and we proved the need for the library, and through the community support and the Board of Supervisors the library stayed open Your efforts are needed this year also. Currently I reside in a senior residence and take care of the library helping to further the outreach program of the local library and also provide a library experience for some physically unable to visit the public library. I hear stories of the reliance on libraries almost from day one, through educational years and professional lives. and now living a life with new needs. Lives may have centered from small towns to major cities and I for one spent many of my years in "college towns"; we all attest to the value and need of the public library at some stage in our lives The public library is vital, especially in a city like Chico as it supports the needs of a DIVERSE COMMUNITY, not just those involved with "ivy covered walls". Their resources and hours allow for our busy family to easily use their many programs. Our first encounter with the Chico branch, Butte County library was on a Sunday. We were looking for housing in Chico. We had driven to Chico from Hollister. We found housing, however, we had to give our future landlords various documents on the same day, in order to secure our lease. We were lost on what to do. We did not know a soul in Chico. Our money situation was (and still is) very delicate. Staying in a hotel until the next day was not within our financial means. To our relief, we found the library open and used their computers to download the needed documents. We signed our lease and are now Chico residents and strong library card users! The library offers many valuable services, with convenient hours, our family has explored a few. My disabled daughter recently joined their volunteer program, providing her with valuable experiences that will serve her well in the future. Their new book club ( English language) is fun, interesting literature is discussed and it is full of different people that gives us plenty of"food for thought'. This program allows us to join the "melting pot" that makes our county so diverse. Their Spanish language book club is authentic and lively, allowing Lis as a family to not only discuss books, but to also use our cultural perspective in a unique way. It is always a pleasure to find that the staff goes out of it's way to serve the diverse library members. We are delighted that the library has outreach to the many communities in Chico, including the Hispanic community. It brings us intense feelings of pride to overhear Spanis,h/English books being read to groups of small children, books my children read when they were young. This library provides international music on loan. Our horizons are expanding all the time, as we check out not only Latin music, but music from all over the world. The library offers book sales that occur during the weekend. Theses book sales fit our small family budget and are during hours we can attend. The library's hours are vital to us. Due to our consultant work (that helps our very tight budget), being able to use the library on the weekends is important. Of course, their many books, CDs, DVDs, audio books in English and Spanish are checked out by this family every week. I volunteer in the Children's Room in Chico for 4 hours every Monday and have done so, for the past 19 years. I have seen the circulation and sheer number of people who visit the library sky-rocket, especially as the economy has taken a downturn and people's pocket books remain tight. Yesterday the temperature reached 1010 and f couldn't help but imagine a future where people would not have this public building to escape the heat on Mondays; nor have access to, a com:puter; nor be able to use a rest room; nor to simply come, sit, and socialize with others. Reducing access to the free loan of books, magazines, music and movies aside, I reiterate: the library is probably the most hospitable and well-used public building in Chico. Please keep it open as many hours as you can. This is such a positive use of public funds. I hope you wiii make it a priority. I believe it is important, else I would not pour my own unpaid efforts into it, together with all the other volunteers and Friends of the Library who contribute their time and energy to this critical aspect of our society and community. I have written only once before but the present situation prompts me to write to you today. I volunteer in the Children's Room in Chico for 4 hours every Monday and have done so for the past 19 years. I have seen the circulation and sheer number of people who visit the library sky-rocket, especially as the economy has taken a downturn and people's pocket books, remain tight. Yesterday the temperature reached 100 and I couldn't help but imagine a future where people would not have this public building to escape the heat on Mondays; nor have access to a computer; nor be able to use a rest room; nor to simply come, sit, and socialize with others. Reducing access to, the free loan of books, magazines, music and movies aside, I reiterate: the library is probably the most hospitable and welli-lused public building in Chico. Please keep it open as many hours as you can. This is such a positive use of public funds. l hope you wifl make it a priority. I believe it is important, else I would not pour my own unpaid efforts into iit, together with all the other volunteers and Friends of the Library who contribute their time and energy to this critical aspect of our society and community. We have been fans and frequent users ever since. I am amazed by all of the, people who use the, library and the variety of ages represented. The leadership has made our library a very welcoming and first rate operation. I know that Butte County has been very generous in supporting this great institution. Thanks so much. It was invaluable to both my mother and myself—I developed my love to read and expand my curiosity and borders in.the library, and my mother always knew I was safe after school until she could pick me up after work. I doubt I would have been a successful and contributing Chico business person for the past 30 years if it hadn't been for the availability of my local library. Thank you for your support.
