Ann Carlson, currently a Regional Aquatic Ecologist for the Forest Service in Missoula, Montana, will soon step into the leadership position on the Eagle Lake Ranger District. She is expected to assume the helm shortly after the first of the year. Carlson's Forest Service career started before she was even hired by the agency. While completing her graduate work in Aquatic Ecology at Utah State University, she was hired as the Senior Technician on a Pacific Southwest Research Station project involved in collecting watershed data on National Forests throughout California. It was through this project that Carlson made many contacts in the Forest Service and was particularly attracted to the Forests in Northern California. In 1990, she was hired as the Forest Fisheries Program Manager on the Tahoe National Forest. For 13 years, Carlson worked on the Tahoe National Forest, providing aquatic expertise on a variety of projects and programs at both the District and Supervisor's Office levels. The Tahoe National Forest was an excellent location for Carlson to launch her Forest Service career since it has high visitor use (being located within a day's drive or less from San Francisco, Sacramento, and Reno) and is active in all aspects of resource management, including forestry, mining, grazing, recreation, and special uses. During this stint, Carlson's favorite annual events were those surrounding kids' fishing and nature days. In 2003, Carlson transferred to the Northern Region in Missoula, Montana, as the Aquatic Ecologist. There, her focus has been on assisting the National Forests with plan revision, aquatic monitoring, and technological transfer of information and analysis tools. Carlson is very excited to be selected as the Eagle Lake District Ranger. She is looking forward to moving to Susanville with her husband, Howard, and enjoying the recreational opportunities in the area. Carlson enjoys many activities, including cross-country skiing, running, biking, and swimming. Her daughter Tess is a sophomore at the University of Oregon in Eugene. -LNF-
