If you believe you have received this message in error, please notify the sender and delete the email immediately. 1 1 • U.S. Forest Service Pacific Southwest Region May 26, 2017 S Northeastern California Plateaus Bioregion Science Synthesis Lassen and Modoc National Forests April Progress Update U.S. Forest Service scientists continue to move forward with development of a science synthesis that will support the staff of the Lassen and Modoc National Forests once they begin revising their forest plans. This process started with a December 8, 2016, public workshop in Susanville, CA. A summary of that event and subsequent public feedback can be read on the Lassen and Modoc Forests Science Synthesis website. In March we explained how we refined the scope of the synthesis, worked with the forest staffs to better define relevant questions, and began the process of reviewing the science literature. Since then the Science Team has: 1. Continued to work with the Lassen and Modoc staff to prepare a base-line map to assist the scientists writing the synthesis. 2. Received additional feedback from the Lassen and Modoc staffs on the preliminary chapter outlines. These tentative chapters follow the general organization of the research questions presented at the Susanville public workshop: Introduction, Forestland, Rangeland, Wildlife and Habitat, Society, and Responding to Disturbances. 3. Continued to review the literature pertinent to the chapter topics. 4. Began writing chapters. 5. Conference call to discuss Team progress. A draft of the science synthesis is expected in fall 2017, followed by an opportunity for public and tribal review. Input received then will be considered in the final science synthesis. A science synthesis is a summary of the existing science that provides land managers with a scientific foundation for revising forest land management plans. The synthesis is the very first step in a multi-step process that culminates with the Final Forest Plan for each forest. Although the Lassen and Modoc National Forests are beginning a science synthesis,they have not yet begun the forest plan revision process. Public and tribal engagement will be welcomed and encouraged at each step of that process once it begins.
