Chico Enterprise Record reporter, Dan Riedel, contacted the Department of Behavioral Health today after receiving a tip the Crisis Stabilization Unit(CSU) is suffering from a nursing shortage and may have closed. The Butte County CSU is not closed. The unit does, however, experience unexpected staffing shortages when nurses call in sick or are unavailable for work. The CSU has been without a nurse a number of times during a shift. Typically, the CSU is staffed and able to provide the full spectrum of services. In the event a nurse calls in sick or is unavailable for work, the CSU is short staffed. In order to provide the best possible care for Butte County residents, and to stay in regulatory compliance, operations change for a shift/period of time when a nurse is unavailable. Individuals in crisis can still receive services unless they have a chronic medical condition or other needs that require the care of a medical professional. The Department of Behavioral Health is working to recruit more nurses. Additionally, they are working to provide other options when individuals in crisis need medical care, such as coordinating with local hospitals and other psychiatric health facilities. Thank you.
