HomeMy WebLinkAboutRevised letter from Aramenta Hawkins regarding fracking¢AGK-'' t BUTTE ++; COUNTY -a June 26, 2014 Butte County Board of Supervisors 25 County Center Drive, Suite 200 Oroville, CA 95965 Dear Butte County Board of Supervisors: Citizens of Butte County addressed the Board of Supervisors at two BOS meetings in the beginning of the year regarding our strong concerns that our water must be protected from fracking. Subsequently, numerous citizen volunteers collected more than 10,000 signatures to support an initiative allowing citizens to vote on fracking and other forms of extreme drilling in the county. (We believe such unconventional drilling should not be permitted until and unless it can be done safely.) Subsequently, on April 8, 2014, the Board of Supervisors voted 4 to 1 to direct staff to develop an ordinance banning fracking within Butte County. County Counsel, Mr. Bruce Alpert, has completed extensive research on a fracking ordinance at your direction. The public needs the opportunity now to scrutinize and review your proposed ordinance. Therefore, we urge you, the Butte County Board of Supervisors, to place the county -developed ordinance on your July 29, 2014 agenda. Recently, the Board of Supervisors in San Benito and Santa Barbara Counties voted to place their initiative to prohibit land uses related to fracking, cyclic steam injection and other high- intensity petroleum operations on the November 2014 ballot. We, the 200 Frack-Free Butte County volunteers and more than 10,000 Butte County citizens, urge the Butte County Board of Supervisors to follow their example. We consider it to be both a political and moral imperative that the Supervisors live up to their vote of April 8th to ban fracking, which we also believe to be in the best interests of all the residents of our beautiful county. Sincerely, Aramenta Hawkins Campaign Coordinator for Frack-Free Butte County cc: Mr. Paul Hahn, Chief Administrator Officer Mr. Bruce S. Alpert, County Counsel 40 a5' C -A 12 cs s!
