Board Members:
Last night the fire department was notified that FEMA is reviewing our$2.1 million SAFER Grant and it could possibly be
revoked over a possible technicality in the program. George Morris and my office, along with our federal lobbyist Kristi
More have been working all day to gather information related to FEMA's possible concerns.
We are still gathering information, and have made several good contacts with FEMA throughout the day. We are
providing them information to ensure they are completely aware of Butte County's position and situation. One item that
would be very beneficial is a letter from the Chair of the Board to FEMA reiterating our position. We are drafting a letter
so that it can be sent by Friday. Our congressional delegation has also been notified, and we will be working with them
to get their assistance on our behalf.
In the mean time, the fire department is continuing to hire as needed to meet the requirements of the grant. All County
fire stations are open, with no brown-outs now or in the near future. We do not anticipate that this will be resolved
until at least Friday, and likely not until either next week or the following week. In the meantime, I did not want you
getting caught off guard.
If you would like additional details on the issue, I can provide them to you, as can George Morris and Andy Pickett.
Thanks,
Paul Hahn
