Patterson, Business Manger Durham Unified School District P.O. Box 300 Durham, California 95938 Dear Christy, Dave York and I met on Tuesday September 4h to review what he and his staff had accomplished in correcting the various code violations in your district. I was pleasantly surprised the amount of work that had been completed. There were only a handful of items that needed completion and I've listed those below: Durham Elementary School 1. Exit corridors used for storage—staff and fire department must monitor this on a continuing basis to maintain adequate clearance for students and staff in the event of an emergency. 2. Library multi -plug power strips in computer room "piggy -backed" to reach wall plug receptacle—permanent wall plug additions started construction in September. 3. Classroom teacher desks and chairs blocking exits to exterior written and/or verbal reminder to teachers as needed. 4. Combustible paper decorations and wall coverings use shall not cover more than 10% of available wall surface of each classroom. Keep flammable papers at least 6" away from electrical receptacles administrative and maintenance staff monitor. Print Shop 1. Extension cords not to replace permanent wiring—maintenance staff construction if progress ("Drew doing'). 2. Appliance cords and extension cords shall be kept in good condition with no- splices-- (,,,Drew doing -,). High School 1. Gym emits obstructed—volleyball storage rack ok as long as itis on wheels and can be moved in the event of an emergency. 2. Install permanent hardwired switch to raise/lower security gate at kitchen entrance—continue to research type of switch that would lessen the "opportunity "for students to raise and lower the gate when they are unattended. 3. 200 Building backup sprinkler heads and wrench missing—district fire extinguisher serviceperson looking for heads and wrench. 4. 200 Building combustible storage around corrosive and flammable storage containers and within 24" of ceiling in a "non-sprinklered" building maintenance staff working with science teachers to maintain clearance. 5. 200 Building poison stored in glass containers in sink Paul from maintenance staff assigned to project. 6. 500 Building arc welding exhaust system upgrade—still needed but GATE students moved to prevent inhalation of fumes in their old classroom above welding area. 7. 500 Building kiln room protective light covers—IPA inspection reported this and maintenance is researching covers available for antiquated lights. S. Auto shop holes in north storeroom ceiling and protective light covers JPA reported and maintenance researching covers and repairing holes in ceiling. Fire Alarms 1. Portable #29 had no horn activation inside --horn is on outside. Dave and I discussed the fact that your JPA insurance inspectors covered many of the things I had listed on my inspection report. While'l agree with him that my methods go beyond a normal fire department inspection (and I will probably reduce the number of items we include on our form) I felt comfortable that after this first inspection round, the students and staff are working in facilities that are protected to a reasonable degree of life and safety. Thank you for the time you spent putting together the correction matrix. Thank you also to Dave and his staff for devoting much of their "unbudgeted" time and money to complete the repairs. Sincerely, William R. Sager Fire Chief Steven J. Fowler Life Safety Officer Cc: File Bill 4rthel, Battalion Chief BCFD Station 45
