The fire lane that extends along the entire west side now intersects with the line that parallels the rear of the gym. (See attached drawing.) In regards to Mr. Wells' complaint I decline to change my original requirements for the following reasons: 1. Mr. Wells' vehicle would block safe and unhampered access to a public way from any of the exit doors along the north side of the gym in the event of an incident where fire engines. fire hose, ambulances. lav enforcement vehicles or personal vehicles may block the required fire apparatus roadway. 2. Box 300 Durham, California 95938 Telephone (530) 895-4675 Facsimile (530) 895-4692 http://www.bcoe.butte.kl2.ca.us/durhanV BOARD of TRUSTEES: Linda Boles Michael McDonald Bill Orthel Tom Simmons Donna Killoran During your recent DUSD fire and safety inspections, one recommendation involved marking a fire land at Durham High School on the Werth side of the m'?it1YUTpnBP roOIT'a and gy Tlr-slUm. building. The specific mandate was as follows: • Run a line the entire length of the building from corner to corner (beginning at the kitchen freezer area and continuing to the corner of the boys' locker room) • Put in parking areas on the west side of the boys' locker room from the north corner up to the designated fire lane. It has come to my attention that this requirement would negatively affect one of our high school teachers, W. Bill Wells, who currently parks his vehicle on the north side of the gymnasium behind the locker room area. To accommodate his parking needs, I ask that you consider the following proposals: Leave the last section of wall on the north side of the building (the boys' locker room) for one parking space that Mr. Wells can use during the school day. This space does not block the entry to any door and affords visiblity for the vehicle. It allows Mr. Wells to access his vehicle for an emergency. In addition, he can haul equipment to and from the fields throughout the school day. Leaving one designated space known to staff and students and a clearly marked fire lane line should not encourage people to park next to the building. Parking spaces at the west side of the locker room (behind the boys' locker room) will bloc visibility at the turn and leave cars out of view and unprotected all day.
