R-2 exit signs
Zuss and Mike,
kfter reviewing the exit sign codes and contacting several other agencies (fire department prevention bureaus) I have
letermined that the "stationery store" variety of fluorescent EXIT signs (letters 6" high with 3/4" or 1" stroke) are
appropriate for "residential" occupancies including R-2.1, 2.1.11 2.2, 2.2.1, 2.3, 2.3.1, and R-3 day-care.

Subject: RE: R-2 exit signs the facts
The lighted exit signs are only for non-ambulatory bedrooms where the only exit for that room is through a door into an
adjacent bedroom (no exit to the exterior). I would recommend the LED type. If the owner chooses self -luminous or
photo -luminous then they must have a light on the sign at all times and the light must have emergency battery back -up --
the light must have a minimum of 5 foot-candles (not sure what that is in watts but will check --hope this clears things up.
If you feel an exit sign is necessary other than as in this example the one I suggested below would work. These codes
are minimum standards and if we want to toughen them up so we are comfortable (in our own mind) for the resident's
safety --then do it.

Russ and Mike,
After reviewing the exit sign codes and contacting several other agencies (fire department prevention bureaus) I
have determined that the "stationery store" variety of fluorescent EXIT signs (letters 6" high with 3/4" or 1" stroke)
are appropriate for "residential" occupancies including R-2.1, 2.1.11 2.27 2.2.11 2.32 2.3.1, and R-3 day-care.
