HomeMy WebLinkAbout19-315Resolution No. 19-315 WHEREAS, after 33years ofdedicated public service, Undersheriff Jones will beretiring onDecember 27 2019. During his career, his service to the citizens of Butte County and the Butte County Sheriff's Office has been exemplary; and WHEREAS, Undersheriff Jones began his law enforcement career in 1�87 when he was hired bvthe Contra Costa County Sheriffs Office asodeputy sheriff. While employed by the Contra Costa County Sheriff, then Deputy Jones worked in the jail and on patrol. ln 1990, he was hired to be a deputy sheriff forthe Butte County Sheriff's Office. During his tenure with the Butte County Sheriff's Office, Undersheriff Jones held assignments in patrol, investigations, training, backgrounds, internal affairs, civil, court security and corrections. He has managed every division in the Sheriff's Office. Qndersheriff Jones promoted through the ranks, ultimately ascending to his current rank and now oversees the day-to-day operations of the department. Throughout his career he has demonstrated outstanding performance no matter what the assignment. The depth aind breadth mfUndersher|U[Jones |avv enforcement experience allows him to handle the day-to-day tasks of being second -in -command expertly. He is professional, extremely knowledgeable, and incredibly loyal; and WHEREAS, in May of 19�97, UmdersherUf]ones, then a sergeant in the Sheriffs Detective Bureau, oversaw the investigation of the murder of Deputy Randy Jennings. The leadership Jones provided during that extraordinarily difficult time, resulted iothe completion of a thorough investigation that helped to bring closure to the Sheriff s Office, Deputy Jennings' family, and the community; and WHEREAS, in July of 20,01, tragedy struck again with murder of Lt. Larry Estes a:nd Deputy Bill Hunter, Und:ersheriff Jones, then a lieutenant in the Sheriff's Office, was called upon to coordinate the investigation into their slaying. Thmough difficult circumstances, Jones again ruse to the occasion to ensure a complete and professional investigation was completed; and WHEREAS, in February of 2017, Butte County faced the near catastrophic failure of the Oroville Dam's Emergency Spillway, which resulted in an evacuation order impacting more than 180,000 citizens, the evacuation of more than 500 inmates from the Butte County Jail, and the evacuation of our dispatch center. in the aftermath of that event, Undersheriff Jones worked tirelessly behind the scenes to manage the ongoing operations of the Sheriffs Office under incredibly difficult circumstances. Undersheriff Jones worked tm, "put the department back together," which allowed Sheriff Honea to deal with the concerns of a very frightened community. Undersheriff Jones demonstrated exactly what it takes to be a great Undemherlf[Hedid what needed tobedone totake care ofthe department, our staff, and support Sheriff Homea's efforts inthe community; and WHEREAS, in November of201O Butte County became the site of California's deadliest and most destructive wildfire. The impact on the community and ourdepartment was devastating. More than forty members of our department lost their homes. Again, Sheriff Honea's time was consumed with addressing the concerns of a, frightened and overwhelmed community. Thankfully, Undersheriff Jones was there to tend to the needs of our staff and ensure the day- to-day operations of the department were maintained. He once again demonstrated what it means to be a great Undemhehff. He took care of the department, be took care of our people, and he took cone of Sheriff Honea.
